Simple phones can now access Smartphone apps

An Israeli technology company has developed a method where old or outdated phones can run apps available only on smartphones.
The system developed by the VascoDe company allows users to obtain apps with the firm’s cloud-based system that requires no downloads and uses the text-based Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), similar to the Short Message Service (SMS), Xinhua reported.
Customers will be able to use many apps available until now for smartphone users only. However, the only difference is that they will see the apps in black and white.
The USSD system does not allow access to the internet, but rather it uses the API (Application Programming Interfaces) from pages like Facebook, Gmail, and the like, according to technology and health website Israel21c.
VascoDe CEO Doron Mottes said 83 percent of mobiles in the world are simple and do not connect to the internet, which means that almost four billion people in the world cannot check their email on the go.
He said the difference between being able to check emails and respond to them, can make a whole difference in a world so hung up on the internet, because it can give you the possibility to respond to job offers, for example.
VascoDe’s main markets are developing countries like Brazil, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, where most of the population cannot afford internet connection or a computer, and has to rely on expensive internet shops to log on their accounts.

How Bluetooth connects gadgets

Smartphones, headsets, keyboards, mice, game controllers, stereos — you name the device, it’s probably connectable via Bluetooth.
Bluetooth has made massive inroads because of the ease with which it links devices.
Basically, just plug it in and wait for the indicator light.
Despite some drawbacks — it can be a gateway for dangerous malware and doesn’t have much of a range — it’s practically ubiquitous.
Once set up, it can be used to transfer data between mobile phones or to send music from a mobile device to a pair of loudspeakers.
“Bluetooth is used anywhere where two devices have to exchange data across a distance and cables would just get in the way,” says Matthias Schaefer of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Germany, noting that it has even found its niche in medicine.
“Just about every smartphone and notebook today comes with it,” he says.
Workers at Swedish company Ericsson came up with the standard in 1994. Since 1998, a manufacturer’s group calling itself the Bluetooth Special Interest Group has focused on further developing the technology.
The name comes from the legendary 10th century Danish King Harald I, who went by the name Bluetooth and was, by all accounts, a good communicator.
The modern-day Bluetooth plays a key role in the field of audio transmissions. One popular use is for small, mobile loudspeakers that can be easily set up wirelessly to play music transmitted from a smartphone or tablet. Users mostly enjoy the ease of set-up.
“I don’t have to set up or plug in anything. I can just get started,” says Holger Wachsmann of the audio industry association High End Society.
That compares to other standards, like Apple’s Airplay or the universal standard DLNA, which require users to register devices with Wi-Fi networks or download suitable apps. Bluetooth uses built-in technology. That said, Airplay and DLNA often deliver better sound quality.
But, with the right stereo and audio codec, Bluetooth-transmitted music can sound fine. Codecs like A2DP or aptX, combined with Bluetooth 4.0 can deliver nearly CD quality sounds, says Wachsmann.
“Audiophiles might hear differences, but it’s not noticeable for laymen.” Bluetooth also limits music transmission to a range of about 10 metres, maximum.
“It depends upon where the antenna is inside the loudspeaker and how it’s built on,” says Wachsmann. Other Bluetooth devices or Wi-Fi networks can also disrupt connections.
Indeed, 10 metres is about the outer limit for most Bluetooth products, though greater distances should be possible with different kinds of Bluetooth. However, further transmission means a lot more energy consumption.
“That’s why most manufacturers limit themselves to short distances.” Bluetooth frees up a lot of possibilities for mobile devices, like data transfers. But regular use wears batteries down faster. It also makes mobiles more susceptible to viruses, which means it should be shut off when not in use.

How to Use Flickr as a Photo Backup Service

Flickr, the original photo sharing service, now offers 1 Terabyte of free storage space and that should be enough to store your half a million photos securely in the cloud.

Contrast this to Dropbox which offers 2 GB of storage space or Google Drive where you get 5 GB for your files and photos. Flickr offers 200x more space with one minor restriction – the size of individual photos should be less than 200 MB. That shouldn’t be a concern unless you are a professional photographer dealing with pictures in the RAW format.
Armed with 1 TB of space, Flickr is now a good candidate to house your entire collection of digital photographs. You may set the default privacy of your online photo albums (Flickr calls them sets) as private and and search visibility as “hidden” and thus no one else will be able to search or view your pictures stored on to Flickr.

Uploading your Pictures to Flickr

Flickr offers a browser-based uploader but it isn’t quite suitable for uploading hundreds and thousands of photos in a batch. There are however a couple of desktop software titles available that will make it relatively easy for you to transfer your picture collection from the computer to the Flickr cloud.
The official Flickr desktop uploader, available for Windows and Mac, was last updated in 2009 but it continues to work just fine under Windows 8 as well.
You can simply drag desktop folders on to the Flickr uploader and it will automatically extract all the image files from the folders and sub-folders. Also, you can go to Tools -> Preferences to change the default privacy before adding new photos to the upload queue.

Flickr Schedulr is another good alternative to the official uploader as it offers nearly all the features but also lets you set a schedule for uploading pictures and videos to Flickr.

Sync Pictures between Desktop & Flickr

PhotoSync takes a Dropbox like approach for synchronizing pictures before the desktop and Flickr. It creates a special watch-folder on your hard disk and any files and folders that you add to this folder are automatically saved as “sets” on Flickr. It’s a two-way sync by default though you do have an option to prevent deletes on Flickr should you delete any pictures locally.
Finally, there’s FlickrSync for Windows that also offers automatic picture uploads but without requiring you to put pictures in one folder. Flickr Sync offers a tree-view of your hard disk (see screenshot), select one or more folders from the list and all the included photos will be sent to your Flickr. The sets will have the same name as your folders though you can override the default setting.

Synchronization is one-way so your locally-stored pictures are never deleted and Flickr just mirrors the contents of your local folders. You can also add network folders for synchronizing with Flickr. I’ll go with this one.

Essential Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts

Here are a dozen of the most useful ones:
1. Admin Menu: It's not the Start Menu so familiar in earlier versions of Windows, but the Admin Menu is as close as it gets in Windows 8. Windows + X pops it up from the bottom left corner.
2. Charms: When you hit Windows + C the Charms bar pops out from the right-hand side of the screen. Charms, a new Windows feature, are a set of tools such as Search, Share and Settings that are located in a Charms Bar that can be flicked in from the right side of the display on a touchscreen.
3. Settings: One of the Charms is Settings. To avoid calling out the Charms bar then choosing Settings it's possible to go directly to Settings: Windows +I. This will reveal the Power button, too. Click on that to reveal the Sleep, Shut down and Restart options, options users say are way too hard to find.
4. Sharing: If you are in an application and want to email or share its content with someone on a social network, hit Windows + H.
5. Second screen: If you are connecting to a second screen as you might presenting a PowerPoint in a conference room, use Windows + P.
6. Search: There are three layers of Search: Apps, Settings and Files. Using touch it calls for whisking out the Charms bar, selecting Search then choosing one of the three layers. With shortcuts, each layer can be reached with one command. They are: Apps: Windows + Q ; Settings: Windows +W ; Files: Windows + F
7. Snap an app: It's possible to snap an application on hold in the right or left quarter of the screen with a second active app occupying the rest of the screen. To snap to the right, press Windows + . ; to snap to the left, press Windows + Shift + .
8. Running Apps: Thumbnails of apps that are running are concealed off the left side of the screen. Pressing Windows + Tab reveals them.
9. To close an app: It's just like it was in Windows 7: Alt + F4 .
10. The desktop: While it's different from the traditional desktop, it is much more familiar territory than the Start Screen. Typing Windows + D brings up the Desktop.
11. Explorer: To launch the familiar Windows Explorer, type Windows + E.
12. Lock the PC: Windows + L brings the computer back to the lock screen, which requires a password.
